Retro and Vintage Art For Modern Films and Characters

modern vintage by tom whalen and dave perillo

Artists Tom Whalen and Dave Perillo have come up with a series where modern movies and characters get a touch of the vintage and retro. The exhibit has been named Modern Vintage and is on display at Gallery 1988 East in Los Angeles today (December 6) onwards. Movies like Batman, Robocop, Army of Darkness and Blade Runner find a clear mention, and there are likely to be many more as the duo intend to bring 25 items to the show.

I Am Made Of Robots

I Am Made of Robots is a project by Alex Varanese, whose work we already know to be excellent for a retro setting. This set shows a robot that would have felt at home in some 1950s sci-fi tropes. For good measure, Alex also gave it some 80s style and an unmistakable audio cassette and stereo inspired look. The robot has side A and side B, A being the good side, and B the evil one. We guess the evil side remains heavy for these robots.

LG brings back the old, retro TV

It might be a niche, but there still is a market for the wonderful designs of times past. LG of Korea is going down the same path with a brand new TV that is so totally retro. The 14-inch TV makes use of the good-old CRT, and has a 4:3 aspect ratio. There is sprinkling of modern tech as well, with a digital tuner, composite video input, and a wireless remote. Available only in Korea, the TV is priced at 249,000 Korean won (~ $216).

Retro mobile phone cases

Modern mobile phones have very sleek cases to house themselves in, but if you’re nostalgic about retro stuff these mobile cases might hold some weight, even if they shouldn’t. Created for the Blackberry Bold, these cases have retractable (and non-functional) antenna to go along a casing that will give the mobile phone the retro, but not-so-good-looking blockish shape.

LG Goes All Retro With New TV

If you’re getting all too bored by the high-tech feature rich new TV that you have, LG would give you a taste of the retro age with the LG serie 1 television. It isn’t just retro in it looks, this is very much a CRT screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Rabbit ear antennae and chrome legs finish off the looks. Old-style knobs for changing volume and channels also make it to the TV. But even an all retro TV could not do without a wireless remote control. So this 14-inch screen has a bit of modern tech, but only the necessary part. Available only in Korea, the TV has full color, black and white, and sepia tones and sells for $216.
