People often see shapes in clouds, artist Martin Feijoó (aka Tincho) goes ahead and marks up those shapes with illustrations. The Shaping Clouds Project took shape based on the clouds Martin photographed on his last trip to Mexico. Now that’s some solid imagination.

The image you see here shows Nacreous clouds, observed on January 6, 2011. These clouds appear about 80,000 feet above ground in the stratosphere and are observed in polar regions where the stratospheric temperature goes as low as -100 degrees Fahrenheit (-73 degrees C). This image was captured from Antarctica. The beautiful looking clouds do also have a sinister purpose, they are the site of chemical reactions that break down ozone, and contribute to the ozone hole.

In a feat that’s creative and somewhat dangerous, photographer Rüdiger Nehmzow captured these beautiful shots of clouds, four miles above the Earth’s surface and through the open doors of an airplane. This right here, ladies and gentlemen, is a good example of how beautiful photographs are captured.
