Rainbow Pencils Add The Sweet Touch of Color

British designer Duncan Shotton‘s Rainbow Pencils keep dashes of color alive and well. Made from recycled paper, the pencils have a six-layer core that brightens up with the colors of a rainbow. The finish is either black or white, but the fun is all about creating a rainbow when you sharpen your pencil. That alone should make you love this one. It has had a successful funding run on Kickstarter, and you can still pre-order.

This Pencil is an Eraser

We thought having a little eraser bud at the end of the pencil was good enough, but the eraser pencil changes that notion with its good looks, and a body made entirely out of eraser. Duk1106 is produced via injection molding to reduce costs, and the pencil does away with the traditional wooden structure in favor of a body made out of an eraser. The pencil is shaped somewhat like a cross and can still be sharpened. Sharp, you’d always want it to be, or you’ll be erasing faster than what you are writing.

The Making of Pencils [video]

This video came quite as a surprise. I had never actually given a serious thought to how pencils were made. And as is wont to happen with such simple things, the process is an eye opener, and almost fascinating. The video shows pencils moving in a German Staedtler factory, going through an automated process and explains the different processes that go into making a pencil.

No Smoking Pencils

Apparently nothing encourages kicking the cigarette habit like a pack of cigarette-like pencils that have the words “No Smoking” written on them. They look pretty darn good, but I have no idea how they are expected to help smokers quit, other than giving them cravings.

Rainbow Tip Pencil

Having a single pencil write in numerous colors sounds kind of cool, even though it won’t be quite an artists’ thing, writing a single line seamlessly in multiple colors ought to be worth it all. Costs $5.

Political figures carved on pencil heads

The line of intricate carvings from Augusto Moreno dos Anjos and Ragna ReuschKlinkenberg has been titled “Politics Directly From the Source,” and shows some of the best known political figures of the day. The carvings show Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy, and were made for the launch of political magazine, Cicero. We wouldn’t know about the magazine, but craft like this is bound to attract attention anywhere.
