Superheroes and Popular Characters Find Room in Iconic Photographs of History

Looking again at the work of artist Agan Harahap (previously), we have more to add from his excellent set of Superheroes in the iconic photographs from the last century. As always, it is the quality that is the draw here. These characters don’t look like they have been thrust into these pictures, but rather appear as if they had always been in the photographs.

Imaginative Images by Giuseppe Colarusso

Images and art by Italian photographer Giuseppe Colarusso are quite tantalizing, sometimes creating a surreal world, and often playing with the idea of something that’s possible, but really improbable. Starting off on the path of creativity and off the usual, Giuseppe got his first photograph by creating something of a pinhole camera out of a shoebox. He used a photographic paper at the bottom of the box and a hole at the center of the lid to get the camera into action.

Photo Manipulations by Mladen Penev

Photo manipulations may be considered by many as easier, but then you would be overlooking the sheer creativity that goes into transforming everyday objects into unique and creative forms. That’s one reason we are enjoying the work by Bulgarian advertising graphic designer and retoucher Mladen Penev. We especially love the work with cigarettes, those little devils are burning off with style, eh?

Celebrities Portrayed as Russian Generals

During Napoleon’s invasion of Russia, English artist George Dawe painted 329 portraits of Russian military officers for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Artist Steve Payne used digital portraits of these paintings mixed with the magic of photoshop to give celebrities their style as Russian military generals. Call it wonderful execution, but most of these celebrities appear to be rather suited in their uniforms.

Composite Photographs Create Unrealistic Scenes of our Planet [pics]

Nathan Spotts created this set of composite images that portray natural landscapes in a totally different light. The masterfully blended images create beautiful scenes.

I’ve always been captivated by the beauty of our world, and often dream of the things that lay just beyond what we can see. I wanted to create images of scenes that are not-quite real, but that almost could be.

Genetic Portraits Show Similarity in the Family [pics]

It isn’t too rare to see people and guess if they are from the same family, their looks usually would give them away. But how closely alike can people appear, is something we came to appreciate only after seeing the work of Canadian photographer Ulric Collette. The photographer merges portraits of two members of the same family in a half and half composite into an image that really accentuates the similarities. Put people in a close enough age group, and the similarities really can be incredible.

Mount Etna Spewing Lava Near Sicilan Town [pics]

Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna has sprung into action again and is spewing ash and lava. For now, the lava has been flowing quietly into a valley and there does not seem to be any imminent danger. Flights from Catania’s Fontanarossa airport had to be suspended for some time due to volcanic ash. At 3,295 metres (10,810 feet), Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe.
