Hublot Recreates the Antikythera Mechanism For a Watch

The Antikythera mechanism is a wonder that has confounded scientists for a long time, displaying a technology so complex that was believed to be impossible for the world in 100 BC. While the original Antikythera was an ancient mechanical computer used to compute astronomical positions, Hublot’s effort is a painstakingly devised horological machine.
It is projects like this that put the genius of ancient gadgets like the Antikythera mechanism into perspective. While the modern watch is complex enough, it really is worth noticing how the ancients managed to create such a complex piece of machinery.
In making the watch, Hublot’s engineers have tried to remain faithful to the gears and style of the Antikythera mechanism, including the use of non-linear gearing that was used to simulate the elliptical patterns of our solar system. The watch is only a concept though, and will be presented at Baselworld 2012.
