Our Beautiful, Fragile World is a book by photojournalist Peter Essick that documents several of the photographs the author captured while on assignment for National Geographic magazine. The photographs span nearly the entire globe, from the Oulanka National Park near the Arctic Circle in Finland to the Adelie penguin breeding grounds in Antarctica.
With each photograph, Essick has added a commentary for the image, plus information and research that went into the subject. The idea is to show the most beautiful natural areas of the world, along with major contemporary issues like nuclear radiation and climate change that threaten these natural wonders. In fact, with things so vividly in front of your eyes, it is difficult to avoid the truth. For this writer, the image of the “sustainably harvested wood” (above) was quite a shocker.
