Honey, I shrunk the kids, and I saved the world. We could at least imagine that happening given this speculative but interesting concept by Arne Hendriks. A nearly two meters tall man, Hendricks imagines the world would be a better place if humans were shrunk down to the size of 50 centimeters.
According to the concept, as the world heads into scarcity, reducing the size of the human population might be a way to reduce pressure on demands of natural resources, food, and the availability of space. Shorter humans would have fewer needs, a chicken would feed a hundred and the entire human population could be concentrated in the world’s six largest urban centers leaving the land outside available for farming and other operations.
Of course, there is the problem of the tiny humans possibly dropping from the top of the food chain, and the tiny walnut sized brain that comes with the small size. The Incredible Shrinking Man project nevertheless was presented at the Dutch Design Awards, and despite its idea being way out in the open, won the Future Concepts category. As the selection committee said, “It is performed with so much zest that you can only take the idea seriously.”
