Mount Etna Spewing Lava Near Sicilan Town [pics]

Europe’s most active volcano, Mount Etna has sprung into action again and is spewing ash and lava. For now, the lava has been flowing quietly into a valley and there does not seem to be any imminent danger. Flights from Catania’s Fontanarossa airport had to be suspended for some time due to volcanic ash. At 3,295 metres (10,810 feet), Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe.

Iceland’s ash plume as captured by weather satellites

Explosion of Iceland’s Grimsvötn volcano has already made news, sending off a 7 mile high plume of ash and dust into the atmosphere. These series of images were captured by US GOES 13 satellite, and stitched together to create this video-effect for us. So how massive is the ash plume? Another Icelandic volcano erupts, makes the ground go alien

Last year, when the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull, it brought air traffic in Europe to a grinding halt. This year, another Icelandic volcano, Grimsvotn erupted, sending out a 7 mile high plume of ash. It won’t ground air traffic, but its falling ash offered near-zero visibility to those on the ground, as visible in these images captured by Vilhelm Gunnarsson of the Icelandic news agency Visir.

The volcano has been active since last September, but this time around it is showing heightened activity, with the ash cloud visible from as far as 30 kilometers.
