Sony and Panasonic have teamed up to announce “Archival Disc” purported to be the successor to the Blu-Ray. The new disc will be able to store between 300 GB to 1 TB of data per disc, and will be a more robust storage medium when compared to hard disks.

They have gone on to promise “inter-generational compatibility” between formats as the standard matures, as opposed to the current system of optical discs where standards change with generations. Of course, the implementation of the promise remains to be seen, and shall only be clear once the discs start rolling in 2015.
