Apple Announces New iPhone 5S, Cheaper iPhone 5C, Free iPhone 4S

Apple has announced new phones and updates for the iDevices. First off, its the launch of the iPhone 5S. This one is an obvious upgrade to its predecessor, the good old iPhone 5, which has now been discontinued. The expected price drop that the iPhone 5 had to take with the coming of the 5S, is a slot now being filled by the new iPhone 5C. Remember, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C are very different phones.

First off, of course, the iPhone 5S. First thing you will notice about it is the color. The iPhone usual black and white are there, plus they have a new companion in gold. The home button has gone iconless, but it now houses a fingerprint scanner for quick, easy and secure access to your phone. Other than these visual touches, the iPhone 5S is the same size as the iPhone 5.

Innards of the phone have gone the way of a major upgrade with the new 64-bit A7 processor. It is twice as fast as the iPhone 5, and obviously handles graphics and performance way better and smoother than its predecessor. A “motion coprocessor” has been added to the mix to handle accelerometer, gyroscope and compass support.

iPhone 5S has received an upgrade in the camera department as well, with dual-LED flash and a larger sensor but the same 8 megapixel image captures. It might not seem much, but the combo can work towards much better images. Prices for the iPhone 5S will start from $199 for the 16GB version, $299 for 32 GB, and $399 for 64GB version, all with a two year contract.

Now for the sibling for the iPhone 5S announced today, the iPhone 5C. The “C” probably stands for cheap because this is the lower price version of the iPhone 5S, though it is much like the iPhone 5, than being a cheap knockoff. It has the same A6 processor as the iPhone 5, a 4-inch display, and the same 8 megapixel camera. Where it goes different is the color and packaging. Unlike its predecessors, the iPhone 5S loves plastic and covers itself in it.

iPhone 5C has plastic backs and sides, though it utilizes them to diversify its color options, perhaps to be more flamboyant. This one has five colors: green, blue, yellow, pink and white. Pricing for the iPhone 5C will start at $99 for the 16 GB version, and $199 for the 32 GB version, all with a two year contract of course.

In case you have been wondering about the free iPhone 4S, that dude survived the ax while many other devices, including the iPhone 5 were put through. The device will be available for free, with a two year contract.

All these devices will be compatible with the upcoming iOS 7, which will offer several camera and filter updates to select devices, several free Apple apps for qualifying devices, and whole lot of other features. ioS 7 will be out on September 18.

iPhone 5S will be up for pre-order from September 20, the iPhone 5C will start off sooner though, with pre-orders accepted on September 13.
