Sun Jifa, a Chinese farmer, lost both his hands when a fishing explosive went off prematurely. Prosthetics don’t come cheap, and the cheap ones barely function, so Jifa decided to be a total badass and build them himself. Just to put things into perspective, this is a man with no hands, building something as complex as prosthetics for himself. It took him eight years, but his steel bionic prosthetics were finally ready.
For the left hand, movement of the elbows is translated into motion of the fingers on the prosthetic arm, allowing it to grab and hold. The right hand uses bones left over in his elbow to open and close. Sun Jifa has since sold over a thousand of such prostethics at about a tenth of the cost hospitals would charge for them.
