We’re not sure if getting thrown into the ocean is a happy moment for subway cars, but they look oddly photogenic touching the water. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority dumps old subway cars off a barge into the atlantic. It may not seem like a smart move on first sight, but it creates habitats for marine life, putting the retired subway cars to good use. Photographer Stephen Mallon has captured excellent images of the program, giving us these gems of subway cars’ afterlife.
