Officials have admitted that they misspelled Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. The mistake has been going on for years, but a local newspaper Worcester Telegram & Gazette has been trying to highlight the mistake since 2003. A study was carried out, and they determined that Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg was the correct spelling, in place of Chargoggagoggmanchaoggagoggchaubunaguhgamaugg (the difference is at position 20, where an “u” is replaced by “o” and at position 38 where an “h” replaces “n”). The study went on to find another variant of the name.. the 49 alphabet “Chargoggagoggmanchauggauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg.” People usually refer to the lake as Webster Lake.
Seriously, some people have too much time on their hands.
