Creations of EgliDesign studio bring to the mind pictures of a wonderland – a world of fantasy and magic. The furniture however, is very much grounded in reality; its unique form guided by perspective and imagination of Lithuanian artist/designer Eglė Mie, the founder of the studio.
Eglė Mie has a long creative career to draw experience from. She has organized exhibitions, painted, worked with engravings, and illustrated books. This was followed by working as an interior decorator where she designed one-of-a-kind furniture for her clients.
Her passion for this line of work eventually led her to setup here own workshop so she could build things exactly like she wanted them. Thus bringing ideas in her mind to solid structures in the real world.
That vision is clearly seen in the fantastic furniture she creates, each with its own intricacy and a design that speaks to the imagination. The Three Kings side table you see above is an excellent example of the design studio’s unique furniture. It is a painting, a sculpture, and a functional furniture item all at the same time. Made of solid wood, the table presents a symbolic status of kings through history.
As the artist puts it:
There’s always something happening, some film playing, in my mind. It’s inescapable – I’m always creating something in my head. You release something into the world, you lose interest in something, you come to understand that you know nothing and you keep on searching. I want to retell all of this as convincingly as possible – I want to expend myself, overflow, explode…
Symbols conflict amongst themselves, endless details, elaborate shapes, and I try so hard to express what I feel… That’s my style, my story, which I try to pass on to you. When my pieces take the shape that I want – that’s when I feel happy and when I can release them to start their own lives.
Egli Design’s works are often intended to emotional and expressive; full of intricate details and hidden symbols with the object of giving fuel to the train of thought and creating a never-ending story. A major belief of the design team is the love for old traditions – where their work represents patience and a drive for perfection.
I simply create – I don’t dictate that things should be one way or another. Such is my path – one without answers and one that is constantly changing. I live on it and cannot live without it. I never learned to speak the language of intellect, so I use my work to express what I feel. My mind often leaves to walk along strange, unknown labyrinths, and I dive in with my entire being to express myself in this way. If I couldn’t create and live with creativity, I’d go mad.
The artist works with a team of creative, professional craftsmen who share the same ideas. The studio says Egli Design’s furniture is not designed to be trendy, fashionable, or even intellectual. Its goal is to be unpredictable and interesting, reveling in the aesthetic pleasure and emotions that do so fervently show in the works of the studio.
