These images show how parts of the earth shine and glitter at night, while the others remain in stark darkness. It is obvious from the photographs that the most brightly lit areas happen to be some of the most developed regions of the world, as western Europe, USA, Canada and Japan happen to show prominently on the map. Egypt’s densely populated region around the Nile also makes a strong appearance, in the otherwise dark Africa.
Much of the remaining world is just specks and dots in this map compiled by scientist Felix Pharand-DeschÍnes. You could see these images as a display of the beautifully lit globe, or post concern over the obvious light pollution that has covered the skies of most of the cities that display themselves brightly here. A night sky that is devoid of most stars and only has a dull moon to show.
